Project Leader - Electrical Design
Join Epiroc Mining India Ltd as a dedicated Project Leader within our Research and Development department, located in Bengaluru. This role places you at the forefront of innovation in the design and development of electrical systems for mining machines and heavy industrial equipment, directly contributing to the advancement of safe and efficient mining technologies.
About the Role
As a Project Leader specializing in Electrical Design, you will take charge of designing electrical systems encompassing LV panels and 24V DC control systems for mining machinery. Your expertise will be crucial in developing detailed electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and layout drawings using tools such as AutoCAD Electrical and Creo. You will lead integration efforts with cabins, operator panels, engine controls, lights, safety, hydraulic systems, and drive trains to ensure seamless operation.
The role also involves selecting and sizing critical electrical components including circuit breakers, fuses, relays, and related hardware. You will be responsible for designing control boxes, distribution boxes, and operator panels while ensuring precise cable harness designs, routing layouts, and comprehensive bill of materials (BOM). Experience working with high voltage (up to 800V DC) components such as inverters and DC-DC converters will be applied to innovate next-generation mining machinery.
You will coordinate with our global R&D teams, managing projects independently, preparing thorough documentation, and actively participating in design reviews during different phases of the product lifecycle. Your leadership and technical guidance will support compliance with stringent electrical system standards including ISO EN60204, EMC, vehicle safety, and functional safety requirements, emphasizing risk management and protection mechanisms against overload, short circuit, and earth faults.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and development of electrical systems for mining machine LV panels and 24V DC control systems.
- Creation and oversight of electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layout drawings.
- Integrate electrical systems with mechanical and hydraulic subsystems, and operator interfaces.
- Develop system architecture including PLC I/O signal lists and CAN bus layouts.
- Specification and sizing of circuit breakers, fuses, relays, and other control components.
- Design of electrical control boxes, distribution units, and operator panels.
- Design and documentation of cable harnesses, routing plans, and bills of materials.
- Ensure compliance with relevant standards and functional safety regulations.
- Lead design reviews and validate calculations, ensuring accuracy and feasibility.
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional global teams to align project objectives.
- Drive cost optimization, feasibility verification, and value-added improvements through VA/VE techniques.
Required Competences, Skills, and Experience
- 10 to 15 years of professional experience in Electrical Engineering, ideally within mining or heavy industrial equipment sectors.
- Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from a reputed institute.
- Proficiency with PLM systems such as Teamcenter, AutoCAD Electrical, Creo, and MATLAB for simulation and design tasks.
- Strong technical knowledge in electrical power and control systems, especially for mobile machinery.
- Experience with diesel engine control systems and Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) controls.
- Familiarity with electrical protection systems including overload, short circuit, and earth fault safeguards.
- Understanding and application of relevant ISO standards like EN60204.
- Deep knowledge of safety standards, risk management, and functional safety practices applicable to electrical systems.
- Experience working with high voltage electrical components and integration on both HV & LV systems.
- Knowledge of hydraulic systems and drive trains is advantageous.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, analytical, and organizational skills to successfully lead projects and teams.
Personal Attributes and Behaviors
- Enthusiastic and able to work effectively under pressure with strong self-motivation.
- Goal-oriented self-starter demonstrating a proactive approach to problem-solving.
