Purpose of the job
The Production Design Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, and developing maintenance requirements for automated systems and equipment within a rockbolt manufacturing plant. This role ensures optimal performance, reliability, and efficiency of plant machinery and automation technologies, contributing to continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Qualification requirements
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Experience
- 10+ years of experience in the development of production equipment and system.
- Experience in leading multidisciplinary teams and managing projects is essential.
Mechanical Design and Engineering
- Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., Inventor) for designing jigs, fixtures, and production equipment.
- Understanding of mechanical systems such as hydraulic presses, threading machines, and cutting tools used in rockbolt manufacturing.
- Knowledge of mechanical tolerances, fits, and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
Manufacturing Processes
- In-depth knowledge of metal forming processes such as:
- Cold and hot forging
- Thread rolling
- Welding (MIG, TIG, resistance welding)
- Heat treatment processes
- Familiarity with machining operations (e.g., turning, milling, drilling) and their application in producing rockbolts and accessories.
Materials Science and Metallurgy
- Understanding of steel grades used in rockbolt production (e.g., high-tensile steels).
- Knowledge of material properties such as tensile strength, ductility, hardness, and corrosion resistance.
- Experience with failure analysis and non-destructive testing (NDT) methods (e.g., ultrasonic, magnetic particle inspection).
Automation and Control Systems
- Experience with PLC programming and HMI/SCADA systems for controlling automated production lines.
- Familiarity with sensors, actuators, and robotic systems used in automated manufacturing.
- Understanding of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
Quality Assurance and Control
- Knowledge of ISO 9001 and other relevant quality standards.
- Experience with statistical process control (SPC) and root cause analysis (RCA).
- Ability to develop and implement inspection and testing protocols for rockbolt products.
Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement
- Familiarity with Lean principles, Six Sigma, and Kaizen methodologies.
- Experience in value stream mapping, process optimization, and waste reduction.
Safety and Compliance
- Understanding of occupational health and safety standards (e.g., ISO 45001, OSH Act).
- Knowledge of machine safety standards and risk assessments.
Technical Documentation and Communication
- Ability to create and interpret technical drawings, work instructions, and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
- Strong communication skills for cross-functional collaboration with production, maintenance, and quality teams.
