Purpose of the Job
The Rock Engineer is an integral part of the extended Marketing Team that works to identify and understand our coal customer’s mine support requirements and business needs and actively execute the design and delivery of innovative product development and improvement projects to further differentiate our product and service offering and deliver increasing value to our customers over time.
The successful candidate will be entrepreneurially minded to join an existing multi-disciplinary team of engineers to accelerate the development and testing of current products and to advise on the development and application of new mine support products and add valuable practical mining expertise and know-how to the team.
Qualification Requirements
- Formal qualification in Mining Engineering / Geology
- COM Rock Engineering Certificate
- COM Strata Control Certificate
- Advantageous - Professional registration
Knowledge & Experience
- A minimum of 10 years mining experience
- Mine planning processes
- Mining methods and practices
- Rock engineering principles, practices, technologies and standards, including the application of empirical and numerical modeling techniques, etc.
- Interpersonal and communication skills.
- Knowledge of support systems
- Advantageous - Understanding and exposure to mechanical equipment design, 3D CAD Modeling, etc.

Support coal market business development
Advise / provide input to Area Managers / Engineers on mining methods and practices
Technical advice / guidance to business development teams, including conducting preliminary surveys and studies of mines to assess the feasibility of potentially new products.
Mine support evaluation and needs analysis
- Understand and evaluate current mine support methods and practices (as part of extended Marketing team), and possible mine support technologies
- Conceptualize product improvements and new product developments, and their practical engineering requirements and implications Mine visits and tests as required.
Design or develop solutions to complex engineering problems
- Effective utilization of engineering knowledge to correctly investigate and identify internal and external customer requirements
- Analysis and investigation of client specifications, accurate compilation and interpretation of design parameters identified
- Effective utilization of engineering knowledge to design relevant mechanical devices, components, controls, materials handling, machine tools, robots and automated manufacturing equipment Compile technical reports and write-ups
- Designs are implemented to optimize productivity and mistake proofing (apply Poka Yoke)
- Preparation of engineering analysis of projects, including preliminary design, calculation, life cycle cost and equipment selection
- Identify and communicate potential risks within scope of work are in a timely manner
- Support mechanical engineering activities.
Communicate clearly with others in the course of engineering activities
- Effective liaison with other relevant engineering disciplines to ensure all specialist engineering disciplines’ input is incorporated into designs and interfaces
- Preparation and delivery of technical presentations to management groups and other staff members
Undertake professional development activities sufficient to maintain and extend competence
- Complete and maintain requisite professional registration
- Individual development plan prepared and is focused on ensuring that all relevant knowledge and technical expertise is up to date at all times.
