About the Role
As an R&D Electrical Engineer, you will lead system-level design and engineering of high-voltage electric power electronics, including DC-DC converters, three-phase traction inverters, on-board chargers, energy recovery systems, and comprehensive Battery Management Systems (BMS) for battery-electric drill rigs. Your responsibilities will span across topology selection, hardware design, control algorithm development, and cross-disciplinary collaboration with software, mechanical, hydraulic, and testing teams to ensure seamless system integration and validation.
You will play a crucial role in advancing Epiroc’s electrification roadmap, improving existing E-Drive products, and supporting new product development projects. By leveraging your expertise, you will help accelerate the transition to fully electric drill equipment while adhering to stringent safety, efficiency, reliability, and cost targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop complete schemes for high-voltage power electronic systems tailored for mining machinery, including selection of topologies for DC-DC converters, traction inverters, on-board chargers, and energy storage converters.
- Perform detailed hardware development tasks such as power device selection, main circuit PCB layout, magnetic component design, and thermal management engineering.
- Define and establish the electrical architecture of battery-electric drill rigs encompassing BMS control, high-voltage interlock protection, insulation monitoring, and thermal management logic.
- Collaborate closely with software teams to implement control algorithms through PLC/C coding and validate systems via Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) simulations.
- Develop and ensure compliance with high-voltage safety standards including ISO 13849 functional safety, SIL, and other mobile machinery safety regulations.
- Design and implement electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) protections involving grounding, filtering, and insulation techniques; conduct Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) to mitigate risks in power electronics.
- Execute thorough testing phases including lab-level experiments, machine integration tests, and environmental reliability validations; systematically identify fault root causes and optimize hardware and control strategies.
- Coordinate with global power electronics teams to unify hardware standards, specifications, and best practices across product lines.
- Support localization initiatives utilizing regional supply chains to adapt and export cutting-edge high-voltage solutions worldwide.
- Lead root cause analysis and field issue resolution for electric drill rigs operating in challenging mining environments both domestic and international.
- Conduct regular visits to mining sites to understand customer challenges related to energy consumption, endurance, and maintenance, and iterate design solutions based on direct feedback.
- Stay abreast of industry trends including silicon carbide (SiC) power devices, energy storage innovations, and on-board fast charging technologies to keep Epiroc at the forefront of mining electrification.
- Standardize E-Drive system design and testing protocols for the Nanjing site and provide internal technical training sessions to continuously uplift team competencies.
Qualifications and Experience
Education: Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Electrical Drives, New Energy Vehicle Engineering, or a closely related field.
Mandatory Expertise:
- At least 3 years of hands-on experience in hardware development involving industrial converters, commercial vehicles, or construction and mining machinery power electronics.
- Deep technical knowledge in DC-DC converters, three-phase inverters, PMSM vector control, and BMS system design.
- Strong understanding of high-voltage safety requirements, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) design, ISO 13849 functional safety, and FMEA methodologies.
- Good grasp of PMSM control algorithms and fundamental knowledge of hydraulic and power matching systems in construction machinery.
- Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, to effectively communicate on a global scale and produce technical documentation independently.
- Willingness and ability to travel to remote mining sites with demanding conditions and undertake international business trips as necessary.
Preferred Skills & Knowledge:
- Experience developing high-voltage e-drive systems specifically within surface or underground mining drill rigs or electric loaders.
- Background in BMS hardware design, thermal management, and insulation monitoring for large lithium battery packs.
- Experience with HIL bench setups, motor dynamometer test platforms, and automated testing systems.
- Participation in electrification platform creation and modular power electronic architecture projects within corporate vehicle contexts.
- Understanding aftermarket services including battery leasing, power component refurbishment, and machine electrification upgrades.
