Role Overview
As a Mechanical Engineer in the UMR R&D team, you will be responsible for the design and development of large structural components and mechanisms specifically tailored for drilling rigs and related equipment. This role demands a balance of technical expertise, creativity, and attention to detail to ensure product performance aligns with rigorous project KPIs including quality, on-time delivery, and cost targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Design structural components and mechanisms for UMR products that are practical, efficient, and compliant with applicable design guidelines and legal regulations.
- Create and maintain precise 3D and 2D CAD drawings using Creo software, ensuring accuracy throughout the product lifecycle.
- Prepare comprehensive design documentation, calculations, and maintain bills of materials for assemblies and sub-assemblies.
- Identify and select suitable materials considering factors such as strength, manufacturability, and durability; specify appropriate manufacturing processes including welding, machining, painting, casting, and forging.
- Collaborate closely with sourcing teams to qualify and evaluate suppliers to maintain product standards and sustainability.
- Provide mechanical technical support to production teams and field service centers, helping troubleshoot and resolve mechanical issues promptly.
- Lead or participate in initiatives focused on new technology development, product improvement, cost reduction, and localization efforts.
- Engage proactively with cross-functional teams to foster innovation, ensuring Epiroc maintains a competitive edge in the market.
- Undertake additional tasks and projects as assigned by management to support business goals.
Required Competencies and Skills
- Demonstrated experience designing large structural components and drilling rig working devices.
- Proficient in 3D/2D design and drafting, with preference for Creo software expertise.
- Working knowledge of relevant industry regulations and standards to guarantee compliance and safety.
- Familiarity with material selection and manufacturing processes including welding, machining, painting, casting, and forging.
- Successful track record of product innovation that has received positive customer or market feedback is highly advantageous.
- Experience with product lifecycle management tools such as Teamcenter is a plus.
- Strong command of English or a demonstrated commitment to learn the language effectively.
- Willingness to travel to challenging work environments including underground mines and construction sites.
- Advanced proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for reporting and presentations.
