About the Role
As a Motion Control Engineer within our dedicated R&D team at Epiroc, you will play a pivotal role in designing and enhancing hydraulic systems critical to our mining and drilling machinery portfolio. This role entails working on both incremental improvements for existing products and pioneering innovations that elevate our equipment to new levels of performance, safety, and efficiency.
Your expertise in hydraulic system design will drive concept development, detailed realization, and successful handover to serial production, ensuring the highest standards are upheld throughout the product lifecycle. You will collaborate extensively across functions—engineering teams, sourcing, manufacturing, technical service, and customer centers—while also interfacing externally with suppliers and end-users, including visits to challenging environments such as underground mines and construction sites. This hands-on position demands technical rigor, creativity, and a commitment to continuous improvement in a fast-paced, evolving industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and design hydraulic systems for new product development projects, focusing on innovation and system efficiency.
- Analyze existing hydraulic systems to troubleshoot performance issues and optimize for reliability and functionality.
- Create and modify hydraulic schematics, layouts, and bill of materials (BOM) encompassing systems, sub-systems, and components.
- Select standard hydraulic components aligned with project requirements and support the sourcing team in supplier evaluation and qualification to ensure quality and cost-effectiveness.
- Assist manufacturing teams in resolving hydraulic-related challenges and drive practical solutions on the production floor.
- Provide technical support to service and customer centers addressing field issues and contribute to swift resolution of challenges faced by end-users.
- Write and supervise comprehensive test procedures to validate and verify hydraulic system performance and compliance to design specifications.
- Contribute to product localization efforts by writing detailed technical reports and analyzing designs against quality and integration criteria.
- Stay abreast of relevant safety, health, and environmental regulations, incorporating these into design and development processes.
- Actively participate in continuous professional development through customer visits, training programs, and keeping updated with technological advances.
- Support global process improvements by proposing and implementing efficient methods, tools, and workflows.
- Undertake occasional travel for business development activities and direct engagement with customers to align product capabilities with market needs.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Hydraulic Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with a strong foundation in hydraulic design and component selection.
- Minimum of 3 years professional experience in hydraulic system development, preferably within the heavy machinery sector, ideally mining or drilling.
- Proficient in 2D and 3D design software for component and system schematic creation.
- Demonstrated knowledge of hydraulic system simulation, optimization techniques, and integration.
- Experience working with construction machinery in mining environments is highly desirable.
- Strong communication skills with proficiency in English or a strong willingness and motivation to develop English language skills.
- Ability to work effectively in demanding environments, including willingness to travel to underground mines and construction sites under challenging conditions.
- Good understanding of applicable safety, environmental, and health regulations relevant to hydraulic system design and heavy equipment operations.
Behaviors and Competences
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills facilitating teamwork and cross-functional collaboration.
- Open-minded, flexible, and committed team player, embracing diverse perspectives and contributions.
- A hands-on approach with a strong responsibility for quality, detail, and outcomes.
