About the Role
As an R&D Software Engineer, you will collaborate closely with global R&D teams, local product and service departments, and end customers to design, develop, and localize software solutions that underpin Epiroc's transformation into a software-defined equipment provider. Your core focus will encompass:
- Developing and iterating advanced control programs for diesel and battery-electric drill rigs using a unified control platform incorporating BMS, inverter controls, and energy recovery strategies.
- Driving software innovation for surface drill electrification, fleet automation, autonomous drilling, and AI-based operational condition analysis.
- Leading software quality assurance, managing safety-classified and general business codebases, and building reusable, standardized code libraries.
- Designing and optimizing embedded communication systems including CAN-Open, J1939, Ethernet, Profibus, and IoT gateways integrated with Epiroc's global telematics platforms.
- Conducting rigorous simulation, lab, and field validation tests to analyze and resolve complex software, electrical, and hydraulic system interactions.
- Facilitating product localization, hardware-software decoupling, and modular software architecture adaptation aligned with global platform standards.
- Delivering technical training sessions, sharing knowledge to enhance team capabilities and supporting the construction of robust software development workflows tailored for the Nanjing plant.
- Engaging in regular on-site visits to mining operations worldwide to collect customer insights, translating operational challenges into commercial software functional improvements.
Responsibilities
- Implement and advance software development schemes for new builds and product line improvements aligned with Epiroc's electrification, digitalization, and automation roadmap.
- Manage end-to-end development of control systems ensuring compliance with functional safety standards such as ISO 13849 and SIL.
- Coordinate software standards and technical roadmaps with global counterparts, exporting mature local solutions to global product lines.
- Support troubleshooting and closure of field service management issues reported from domestic and international mining sites.
- Continuously monitor and apply emerging trends in mining electrification, autonomy, embedded AI, and digital maintenance solutions.
- Promote a culture of collaboration, systematic problem-solving, and adherence to safety in software and hardware integration.
Key Qualifications
- Master's degree in Software Engineering, Electrical Automation, Control Engineering, Vehicle Electronics, or a closely related technical field.
- Minimum of 3 years professional experience in embedded software development within construction machinery, mining equipment, or commercial vehicles.
- Strong proficiency in IEC-61131 PLC programming, C and C++ development within embedded environments; experience with Codesys, Bodas-design, Opencs or related mining control software development tools.
- In-depth knowledge of software version control, change management, and code quality processes.
- Solid understanding and practice of functional safety standards (ISO 13849, SIL) applied to mobile machinery control systems.
- Expertise in on-board communication protocols including CAN-Open, J1939, Ethernet, Profibus, and familiarity with real-time embedded operating systems, task scheduling, and fail-safe design principles.
- Comprehensive electrical engineering background and hydraulic control logic knowledge.
- Hands-on experience with on-board remote communications, data acquisition, edge computing, and telematics including remote diagnostics and OTA firmware upgrades.
- Excellent command of written and spoken English to engage in cross-regional collaboration and technical documentation delivery.
- Willingness to undertake international business travel, including visits to remote mining sites with challenging environmental conditions.
Preferred Experience
- Software development for surface and underground mining drill rigs or haulage equipment.
- Expertise in battery management systems (BMS), electric drive controls, and energy management algorithms for battery-electric mining machinery.
- Experience with autonomous drilling solutions, multi-machine fleet control, and multi-sensor fusion algorithms.
- Knowledge of embedded Linux or QNX real-time operating systems and deployment of edge AI algorithms.
- Participation in the design of modular software platform architectures and unified vehicle control operating systems.
- Understanding of the mining aftermarket ecosystem including predictive maintenance and digital software subscription services.
